Subject Background:
The Design and Technology department seeks to encourage all our learners to believe in themselves by achieving and enjoying success. Design and technology are practical and valuable subjects. It enables children and young people to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation. It teaches how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable. At these exciting times within our region, we anticipate that creative qualifications will be necessary and valued in an expanding industrial and commercial climate.
It is the department's intention to enable all students to work to the best of their ability and to gain maximum enjoyment and satisfaction from their work. Design and Technology naturally encourages individual responses, which are equally valid if they are the pupil's best effort. When pupils are given the opportunity to produce artwork in a creative, organised and well-disciplined environment, their interest, ability and expectations increase.
It is the department’s intention that all students have a love for food. This enables students to develop life skills by learning how to cook a range of dishes that can in turn be shared with their families. Food allows students to have an improved understanding of well-being, nutrition and health but also explore the wider environmental and sustainable issues linked with where their food comes from.
KS3
The focus of the KS3 curriculum is to enable students to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills within the diverse areas of Design, Technology and Food. Each project has been planned to build on existing knowledge whilst extending a range of skills allowing students to make effective progress. The projects delivered at KS3 cover a wide range of specialisms including textiles, food, graphics and 3D design. Students have the opportunity to experiment with different materials, ingredients and processes throughout the carousel. Students are encouraged to complete contextual studies in textiles, graphics and 3D design considering artists/designers relevant to their own work. In food students complete a range of theory tasks. Across KS3 students are assessed on their knowledge, skills, design work and final outcomes.
KS4
The KS4 curriculum has been planned so that students get a wide range of knowledge, understanding and skills within different areas of Design, Food and Technology. The projects across all specialist areas have been carefully planned to enable students to build on their prior knowledge and skills from KS3 whilst progressing throughout KS4. Each course enables students to experiment with different materials/ingredients and processes, develop creativity and extend on contextual and theoretical studies. Students have the opportunity to experiment with different materials, media, techniques and processes throughout each project. Students are expected to broaden their understanding and knowledge of different periods in history, art movements and the courses cover many artists/ designers that are relevant to their studies. Students have the opportunity to study GCSE Art and Design: Textiles Design/Graphic Design/ 3D Design and GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition.
