Subject Background:

By studying Geography students will develop a spark of curiosity about the world around them. They will develop knowledge and skills to enable them to become independent enquirers, creative thinkers and team players.

Within both KS3 and KS4 students will develop knowledge and understanding linked to the concepts of physical features and processes, human interactions and the environment, geographical terms and techniques and location and place knowledge.  Students study a range of topics linking to those themes and focus on key concepts linked to literacy, numeracy and cartographic skills.  The department also embed a range of recall techniques to ensure students develop long term memory skills.  Following successful visits in the past to Sorrento, Italy, the department is also running an educational visit to Iceland in October 2023.

At GCSE we follow the AQA 9-1 GCSE Geography course with students examining the human and physical world around them. This includes looking at a wide range of issues related to the challenge of natural hazards, the living world, UK physical landscapes, urban issues and challenges, the changing economic world and the challenge of resource management.  Students also participate in fieldwork investigating both human and physical features at places along the North-East coast.
