Exploring the Outdoors and Building Confidence
Last week, students from St Michael’s Catholic Academy set off on an unforgettable Outward Bound adventure, taking part in a range of challenging and inspiring activities. From cliff‑jumping and hiking to canoeing and navigating the great outdoors, pupils truly embraced the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and work together in new environments.
Media Correspondent Ava reported that the trip offered not just excitement, but meaningful learning experiences. Fellow student Penny shared, “I really enjoyed the different activities we experienced,” while another student Ava added, “We learnt teamwork, life skills, and leadership.”
Across the week, pupils developed confidence, resilience, and friendships - all while creating amazing memories they will carry with them long after the adventure ended.
A Teacher’s Perspective: Discovery, Growth and Jaw‑Dropping Moments
One staff member who accompanied a group of Year 9 students described the trip as both exhausting and extraordinary - a week filled with powerful moments of discovery for pupils and teachers alike.
For some students, it was their first time visiting the Lake District or climbing a hill steep enough to make their legs ache. The teacher shared a touching moment from the first full day, when a student stopped at the lake and said:
“Oh my gosh Miss, this is beautiful.”
After a four‑hour walk, rowing to the far end of the lake to cook tea, and rowing back in the dark, the group paused in silence among the stars when the instructor asked them to switch off their head torches. In awe, the same boy whispered:
“Miss, this is the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Learning from the Landscape
Throughout the trip, students engaged in thought‑provoking conversations about constellations, the Ice Age, the formation of the lakes, food chains, conservation, climate change, and even why their legs ached after scrambling up hills.
Nature offered front‑row seats to wildlife encounters - from deer (mistaken at first for goats!) to hares, buzzards, and the exciting sight of a woodpecker.
Courage, Teamwork and Personal Triumphs
The week was filled with powerful moments of bravery and personal growth. Students who first said, “I absolutely can’t do this,” found themselves climbing, scrambling, and achieving goals they didn’t think possible.
The teacher described children who:
- Confronted fears
- Climbed to the top despite nerves
- Cried from the cold yet still chose to jump from a ledge because they didn’t want to miss the experience
- Supported each other physically and emotionally
- Encouraged, laughed with, and cheered each other on
These moments of grit, joy and unity defined the Outward Bound experience.
A Week to Remember
The teacher summed up the trip as:
“Honestly the most fabulous (and exhausting) week, but such an amazing experience for our students.”
For the young people of St Michael’s Catholic Academy, Outward Bound was far more than an outdoor adventure - it was a week of learning, friendship, courage and awe‑inspiring experiences that will stay with them for years to come.
A Remarkable Four Years of Adventure
Over the past four years, an incredible 250 students from St Michael’s have taken part in this life‑changing experience. The confidence, friendships and growth that emerge from the Outward Bound course continue to make it a highlight of our enrichment offer.
And the excitement doesn’t end here - we’re already looking forward to the next adventure in 2027!
